6 things your nails could tell you about your health

Pale white nails
If your fingernail beds are looking a little ghostly, you may have anemia due to low levels of iron. This could lead to low levels of oxygen, which causes the skin and tissues to become pale.

Yellow nails
Certainly don't look pretty, and what causes that color is even grosser. Nails with a yellow-ish tone, could be a characteristic of a fungal infection that generally grows within the nail. Topical medications usually won't work and you should go to a doctor for treatment.

Brown spotted nails
Dark brown or black vertical lines on the nail bed should never be ignored. This may be a warning sign for melanoma, which is a type of tumor associated with skin cancer. If your nail pigment looks unusual, definitely get it check by a doctor immediately.

Cracked tips
Breaking a nail can be a bummer, but if your tips seem to crack at the slightest touch, it could be related to your thyroid gland. This gland in your neck regulates metabolism, energy and growth. An imbalanced thyroid can lead to hair loss, brittle and thin nails.

Striped nails
Short horizontal white marks or streaks are likely the result of trauma to the base of your nail. These may last from weeks to months and usually will disappear on their own.

Blue nails
A blue-faced nail means you're not getting enough oxygen to your fingertips. This could be linked by respiratory disease, which can mess up the blood vessels in your nails. But it could also mean you have slower blood circulation, especially when exposed to cold temperatures.
