Modern Family star Julie Bowen has joined Melissa McCarthy in the New Line comedy Life of the Party.

The movie, being directed by McCarthy's husband, Ben Falcone, began production last week in Atlanta. It counts Maya Rudolph, Gillian Jacobs, Debby Ryan and Animal Kingdom star Molly Gordon among its cast.

The plot is described as being in the vein of the Rodney Dangerfield hit Back to School (1986), a comedy about a crass partier who joins his son at college.

Bowen will play McCarthy's nemesis in the movie.

McCarthy and Falcone wrote the script for the project, and are producing with Chris Henchy (Daddy's Home). New Line has set a May 11, 2018 release.

Bowen has starred in the award-winning ABC series Modern Family since 2009, twice winning an Emmy for her work. Life of the Party marks a rare foray into features; the last movies she appeared were in were 2012's Rob Lowe drama Knife Fight and 2011's comedy Horrible Bosses.

Bowen is repped by Paradigm and Liberman Zerman Management.
