Delta has a new plan to combat lost luggage
Sick of losing your bags? Well, now there's a tag for that.
Delta Air Lines is replacing its barcode tracking system with new tracking tags. This $50 million investment in radio frequency identification technology allows scanners to read data from a distance through radio waves.
From pinpointing a bag that needs to come off a plane, to identifying bags that are going to the wrong plane; RFID technology promises to make missing bags a thing of the past. And it looks like it might actually work. The system was tested to have a 99.9 percent success rate.
Through RFID and the Delta mobile app, customers will be able to track their bags in real-time during their trip. RFID is the same technology used in pet microchip trackers.
