There is a lot of controversy surrounding different health facts you may have heard since you were a child.

While some facts hold true, there are many myths circulating as truth.

So, what's real and what's not?

First of all, it turns out that sitting too close to your TV isn't actually all that bad for your eyes. While it can eventually strain and burn your eyes to sit up too close, the damage isn't permanent.

Also, despite what your mother may have told you to prevent you from choking on your gum, swallowing it doesn't actually cause it to stay in your system for seven years.

Gum will digest just like any other food you consume.

It may also be time to call out your uncle who always tries to leave Thanksgiving dinner early. Tryptophan in the turkey isn't what's making him tired, that's just an old myth.

To be affected by the tiring effects of tryptophan, you would likely need to eat multiple whole turkeys. It might just be that extra glass of wine making him tired.

While you're busting food myths, it's time someone told you organic food doesn't necessarily indicate more nutrition. Organic mac and cheese is in no way better for you than a non-organic apple.

While we're talking apples, it's important to note that an apple a day doesn't always keep the doctor away. Change it up when you're choosing your fruit!

Ensuring that you're eating fruit and vegetables is also a better way to prevent a cold than simply staying warm. It's simply not true that you can get sick from being cold, or going outside with wet hair.

It all has to do with germs and their effect on your immune system! Getting in more vitamins can help with that more than a blanket.

However, as good as carrots may be for you, they don't have the ability to give you night vision.

Eating the right foods can really just support functions your body already has, not fix them. So, probiotic yogurt won't actually put your digestive system back in order. If you've got a problem there, see a doctor!

Chances are your doctor can bust any other myths you may have when you go for a visit. There's just another reason to head to your annual visit!
