Breastfeeding Mom Says She Was Told to Cover Up or Leave Business

BELTON, Mo. (WDAF) -- A metro mother said she is outraged after she said a business commented on her breastfeeding. The incident happened on Tuesday at Jump City in Belton.

Staff told FOX 4 they were receiving complaints when the mother was breastfeeding in the play area. The owner said his manager offered the mother a room to go inside to breastfeed, but Lanei Saelens said the manager told her she had to go in the room or she would have to leave.

"She came up to me and said, 'were you the one breastfeeding today in here?' and I was like 'yes, why?' and she said 'well you can't be doing that, you need to go into another room because you are upsetting other parents and they are coming up and complaining to me.'"

Amyn Punjani, the owner of Jump City, said the conversation went differently.

"We never told her that she needed to cover up or leave, she was asked if she needed to use a blanket or anything because she didn't have anything to cover her body," he told FOX 4.

Saelens said Jump City gave her a refund and she will not be returning to the business. The owner said he has had hundreds of women breastfeed at his business and he has never asked one of them to leave. He said Saelens is welcome back any time.

The business also issued a statement on its Facebook page.
