10 accomplishments Bernie Sanders' fans love

He may be out of the running for president but Bernie Sanders has left a lasting legacy:

1. He organized the first civil rights sit in at the University of Chicago. Sanders and other students protested the school's segregated housing policy.

2. During his second reelection as mayor of Burlington, Vermont in 1983 he doubled voter turnout in 1983.

3. Burlington became the first city in the U.S. to fund community-trust housing under Sanders' leadership.

4. Sanders ran for student body president in high school but didn't win. The winner did adopted his idea of raising scholarship money for kids in Korea.

5. He successfully sued local television companies which resulted in lower rates for customers.

6. He's one of two sitting senators to have witnessed Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech. The other senator is Mitch McConnell.

7. Sanders organized trips across the border into Canada from July 1999 to April 2000 so seniors could buy prescription drugs at a lower price.

8. He co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus during his first year in the House. It's the largest organization in the Democratic congressional caucus.

9. He's nicknamed "The Amendment King", because he's passed more amendments in the House than any other member.

10. Sanders is the longest serving independent in congressional history, having served 16 years in the House.
