Town celebrates retirement of 93-year-old nurse's 72-year-long career

Nurse Makes History Retiring At 93-Years-Old After Working For 72 Years

When you love what you do, you do it until you can't do it anymore.

Just ask 93-year-old Alice Graber, who just retired from a near 72-year-long nursing career.

Now that's dedication.

Graber officially retired in Freeman, South Dakota this week from the Salem Mennonite Home.

Graber was a nurse there for over 20 years, though she began her career in Nebraska after completing a three-year nursing program at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln.

Originally thinking she wanted to become a home economics teacher, Alice told ABC News:

"In nursing you just have to have a lot of patience and perseverance. It was one way of helping people and I thought, 'At least I'm doing something that's good.' And, I like people."

And after over seven decades of helping people, it's safe to say Graber did more good in her career than most can ever hope to do.

In honor of her retirement, over 1/8th of Graber's small South Dakota town came out to celebrate with a giant cake that listed he greatest achievements and accomplishments.

She is retiring as the oldest nurse in the state of South Dakota.

Graber says that she will continue volunteering at the nursing home in order to keep busy.

We don't expect her to slow down with helping people anytime soon.
