'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' might not have opening crawl

Few moments in movies are more recognizable than the "Star Wars" opening crawl. Beginning with "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away," the crawl has been part of the franchise for decades.

But the franchise's upcoming standalone movie, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," may not have that iconic feature. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy made the reveal on Friday at the Star Wars Celebration Europe.

"You know, we're in the midst of talking about it, but I don't think these films will have an opening crawl," Kennedy told ET Online. "I think that's what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today."

The "Rogue One" panel at this weekend's Star Wars Celebration kicked off with the opening crawl of "A New Hope," followed by the "Rogue One" logo. "Rogue One" takes place after the events of "A New Hope," following a Rebel Alliance that stole plans for the Death Star.

"Rogue One" director Gareth Edwards also commented on the crawl, and acknowledged that the standalone movies will likely want to differentiate themselves from the main series.

"I think basically there's a lot of things that I probably can't talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that," he said. "The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films...the whole crawl of it all — it's funny people are fascinated on that."

Disney and Lucasfilm will also be releasing another standalone film, one that focuses on a young Han Solo, in 2018. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" hits theaters Dec. 16.
