If you needed a solid excuse to pack the trunk and make a quick getaway this weekend, this might just do the trick.

GasBuddy reports that gas prices in more than half of the U.S. have plummeted to below the $2 mark.

The decline can be seen in 32 states to be exact – commuters and non-carpoolers, rejoice!

These states span the entire Southeast and the majority of the rest of the states are located in the Midwest.

The state with the lowest price (currently) is South Carolina, averaging around $1.96 per gallon.

California, unsurprisingly, ranks highest at an average of around $2.91 per gallon.

Over the course of the past three weeks, gas prices have slowly but steadily decreased, reaching the lowest average gas price ($2.27) for this time of year in over a decade.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, pointed out:

"Any way you slice it, this summer has featured the cheapest Memorial Day, July 4 and perhaps Labor Day in the last eleven years, and motorists have been responding by hitting the roads in record numbers, according to a GasBuddy study before the summer driving season began."

Now that's something we'll take a celebratory drive in honor of!
