A 21-year-old man was stabbed numerous times during a screening of Blake Lively's "The Shallows" in Santa Rosa, California, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Santa Rosa Police Department's Facebook page, a call came in around 4 p.m. that a man had been stabbed at the Roxy theater in Downtown Santa Rosa.

"The suspect, who was unknown to the victim, approached him from behind and stabbed him several times in an unprovoked attack," read the statement. "Witnesses tended to the victim's wounds until police officers and emergency medical personnel arrived."

Within minutes, officers found a 23-year-old male who matched the description of the suspect. They detained him and took him into custody for attempted murder "after he was positively identified as the attacker. We are in the process of confirming his identity and will provide that information as soon as possible."

The officers located the weapon, and the victim was transported to a local hospital for "life threatening" stab wounds. There is no update on his condition. Police have not yet identified a motive for the stabbing.

The Santa Rosa Democrat wrote that the patron was watching "The Shallows" during the time of the stabbing.

The theater is not commenting on the situation.
