Comicbookgirl19 reveals the downside to being her own boss

Updated

Being your own boss for any field can be tough. But in the social media space, where platforms change daily, it can be ever harder to navigate. If anyone understands this, it's Danika Lee Massey, also known as Comicbookgirl19 to her over half a million followers. Massey is best known for her viral videos that feature her expertise on the world of science fiction. From television recaps to comic book reviews, Massey's weekly clips have garnered over 33 million views and have helped her nab a starring role in go90's newest series "Marvel Off the Rack." And she does this all as her own boss.

With years of social media experience under her belt, Massey has learned the ins and outs of managing her career in an ever-changing field. Her biggest takeaway: find a balance between work and your personal life. It's advice that everyone can take note of.

We recently spoke to the viral online personality about what projects she has in store for the future and one thing she's learned since becoming her own boss.

You're juggling a lot of projects right now. Where do you see the progression of your career going in the next few years?
My creative partner and I have a lot of ideas -- too many ideas -- but we would love to make movies, television shows, documentary series. There's so many ideas that we have. We want to continue our team since we are completely homegrown. We just want to grow our production company and I would love to direct, produce, and write. I want to a write a comic book too down the line. I'm not quite ready since I think that I have to an experience of being an "X Men" a little more; a lot of what we do is having that "X-Men" lifestyle. We're always on the move, there's always danger happening. Having an independently run studio for four years on YouTube, is tricky. I don't really see that many other people doing what we're doing.

What's the one piece of advice you wish you had received before launching your social media career?
It would say don't work yourself to death; it's not worth it. Being my own boss, I'm a tougher boss on myself than all the bosses I've had. I have really tired myself out sometimes. Since then, I've learned that you have to find balance. I wish I had been more aware of having to find that balance. It is important to put everything you have into your work, but you have to leave something for yourself at the end of the day.
