7-year-old girl dies after collapsing at cheerleading camp
PARK RIDGE, Ill. (WGN TV) --A 7-year-old girl from Park Ridge died during cheerleading camp at a suburban high school Monday.
According to a statement released by Maine Township High School District 207, Katherine "Kate" Babich was attending Summer Cheer Camp Monday morning when she became ill.
The Cook County medical examiner still hasn't released a cause of death in this case.
A camp staff member reported that Kate wasn't well. She was having difficulty breathing. That's when a trainer began to perform CPR and paramedics were called.
At one point, after paramedics arrived, an automatic defibrillator was also used before they arrived at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she was pronounced dead just before 1 p.m.
Kate had just finished 1st grade at Field Elementary School in Park Ridge.
District 64 Superintendent Laurie Heinz said in the statement. "Kate is known as an inspired learner, a leader and a good friend to everyone in her class. I know her classmates and Field staff will miss her dearly."
The remaining sessions of the cheerleading camp were canceled.
Crisis counselors are being made available to anyone who may need them.
Park Ridge police continue to interview camp staff and others about the death.
