Pavel Auxtin, a senior member of the U.S. Air Force, flew from Colorado to New York City to surprise his girlfriend at her commencement ceremony Thursday afternoon.

After receiving her diploma, Nadia Vengreniuk was asked to stand up and return to the stage.

Auxtin then walked in from the side entrance of the stage, bearing a bouquet of flowers and an engagement ring.

"This last semester, all I've been telling you is [to] just graduate and we can be together... today I'm here to keep that promise," he said.

Vengreniuk said yes, later telling PIX11 that she had no idea that this surprise was coming.

"[I'm] beyond happy," Vengreniuk said. "I can't describe it."

The newly engaged couple met at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn.

They are planning to move in together soon, depending on where Auxtin is stationed next.
