Police Reportedly Use Tear Gas as Concert Erupts Into Chaos

At Hot 97's annual Summer Jam concert on Sunday night (June 5), 35 people were arrested with one injured and three taken into custody as the result of a floor fight at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, Lt. Brian Polite of the New Jersey State Police Department tells Billboard.

"There were 35 arrests at this year's Summer Jam, which is significantly lower than last year's count," he explained. "Most of the arrests were largely due to offenses typical of a large concert or sporting event such as soliciting without a license, or selling without a permit, and disorderly conduct." At last year's Summer Jam, 61 people were arrested and 10 troopers were injured.

The melee that broke out in the general seating area in front of the stage erupted into slight chaos following Fat Joe and Remy Ma's set around 12:30 a.m. Folding chairs had been thrown while other concertgoers panicked and ran for the exit. The house lights also remained on even as the next performers, A$AP Ferg andA$AP Rocky, took the stage. State Police arrested the suspects and contained the situation within several minutes, causing a temporary delay in the show. Hot 97's veteran DJ Funkmaster Flex treated the crowd to a string of hits to stall for time, per the station's assistant program director and Ebro in the Morning host, Ebro Darden. The impromptu intermission ultimately shaved off time reserved for headliner Future to perform.

"Radio station told me to leave...major pump fake," the Atlanta rapper tweeted, before shutting down rumors of beef between him and the New York radio station. "Totally satisfied & happy wit hot 97 always showing love spinning my records...misunderstood,dnt play Yoself."

Despite initial reports that the victim (whose identity has not been revealed) was stabbed as a result of the scuffle, Lt. Polite says the victim suffered a non-life-threatening "laceration to the head" and was taken to Hackensack Hospital.

Summer Jam's pre-concert at the Festival Stage, which was set to include performances from Chance the Rapper and Tory Lanez, was canceled on Sunday afternoon due to threats of severe weather. The show began at approximately 9:30 p.m. Other high-profile performers at Summer Jam included Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T and DJ Khaled.
