Clif Bars Recalled Over Listeria Concerns

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WXIN) – Clif Bar is recalling three varieties of their bars sold nationwide. The recall stems from concerns about possible listeria contamination, though no illnesses have been directly linked to the products.

Clif Bar voluntarily issued the recall after they learned their ingredient supplier SunOpta distributed sunflower kernels that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The following flavors are affected by the recall:

CLIF BAR® Nuts & Seeds energy bar all pack configurations with "best by" date ranges starting 08JUN16 through 21JAN17

CLIF BAR® Sierra Trail Mix energy bar all pack configurations with "best by" date ranges starting 05JUN16 through 24MAR17

CLIF® Mojo® Mountain Mix® trail mix bar all pack configurations with "best by" date ranges starting 16JUN16 through 02FEB17

Listeria can sometimes cause a serious infection that affects the gastrointestinal tract. The infection can cause short-term problems such as a high fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea, headaches, stiffness and nausea.

Listeria can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, elderly, children and anyone with a weak immune system. Some infections can cause death.

The CDC estimates there are 1,600 illnesses and 260 U.S. deaths per year due to listeriosis infections.
