4 Behaviors Can Drastically Decrease Your Cancer Risk

At least 600,000 Americans will die this year from untreatable cancer.

That number is staggering, but, fortunately, there's a great deal you can do to help prevent yourself from getting cancer.

A study by JAMA Oncology looked at behaviors that could help halt preventable cancers.

1. Just Say No

Quitting smoking is one of the top ways to prevent cancer. That may sound obvious, but here's the thing: cancers from smoking are 80 to 90 percent preventable.

2. (Don't) Drink Up

Reducing your alcohol intake could have a major impact on your health. Based on JAMA Oncology's research, nearly 20 percent of adults in the US commonly engage in heavy drinking.

3. Everything in Moderation

Just as it's important to watch your drinking, maintaining a healthy weight is essential. Of course, you need to eat to survive, but 80 million adults in the US were found to not be living a "healthy lifestyle" based on BMI.

4. Get Physical

Exercising doesn't just burn calories, it can add years to your life. Yet only one-fifth of American adults fulfilled the government's guidelines for encouraged physical activity.

If everyone in the US did those things, researchers predict cancer rates would dip between 40 and 70.

Which isn't 100 percent, but it's a good start.
