There once was a time when flip phones and sidekicks were all the rave.

During this period, brands such as Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson dominated the market, producing the latest in cutting-edge phone designs. Fast forward to 20 years later, however, and the phone industry has progressed in ways many may not have imagined possible.

With modern cell phones coming equipped with touchscreens and wireless capabilities, you may wonder if older phone models are still in high demand. Well, according to recently released data from SellCell.com and OnePoll, unused cell phones are collectively valued at upwards of $33.8 billion nationwide.

Colin White, SellCell.com's managing director, told Business Insider,"Many Americans are looking for ways to earn some extra cash, especially in a sluggish economy...So, it is very surprising that consumers are literally sitting on billions of potential dollars in their unused smartphones and feature phones, often stashed away in boxes at home."

Depending on the condition and type of phone, you may be sitting on hundreds or even thousands of dollars and not even know it!
