Get Ready: Octopuses and Squids are Taking Over the Oceans

If "The Little Mermaid" had a lasting impression on you, then you may to this day still be terrified of octopuses.

Research is showing that the eight-legged creatures aren't going anywhere, and they're actually growing. Not only are they expanding in size, but they're increasing in number as well.

Not all octopuses come in the same shape and size. The research looked at all cephalopods, which also include squids and cuttlefish.

Though other ocean life has been less fortunate, the cephalopods are thriving, taking over the better part of the waters.

The study was inspired by the giant Australian cuttlefish, which almost went extinct. The findings showed that despite a fluctuation in the numbers, the cephalopod population has in fact been steadily increasing.

Scientists aren't exactly sure what to attribute the population growth to. It may have to do with outside factors like ocean acidification, global warming and humans interfering with the food chain and killing off predators.

The scientists worry that if cephalopods reach a certain level of overpopulation, they may run out of food and resort to eating each other.

Scientists have pointed out that cephalopods are easily adaptable, so even if they get knocked down, there's a chance they'll take the lyrics of Chumbawumba to heart and get up again.
