NYC Tourist Allegedly Punched In Face After Refusing To Tip Man For 'Free Hugs'

Free hugs may seem like a good thing, but they can also come with strings attached, as one Canadian woman learned it the hard way.

She was allegedly punched in the eye after declining to tip a man known for giving out free hugs in Times Square, reports the Toronto Sun.

The incident involving 24-year-old Jermaine Himmelstein and 22-year-old tourist Sophie Violene Dauvois occurred on Thursday, according to the New York Police Department.

While the New York Daily News reports that either she or her friend willingly took a photo with him, WCBS notes that he "jumped into a picture...[she] was taking."

Authorities say that Himmelstein then insisted that she give him a tip, and when she resisted, he assaulted her and fled the scene.

The woman was taken to the hospital for her eye and other minor injuries, and the man was located by the NYPD.

He now faces charges related to assault and robbery.
