The United States has a long way to go in overcoming systemic intolerance, but President Barack Obama brought a message of hope and progress to the class of 2016 students at Howard University.

"When I was a graduate, the main black hero on TV was Mr. T. Rap and hip-hop were counter-culture. Underground," he said during a Friday commencement address at Howard. "Now, [Scandal and Grey's Anatomy producer] Shonda Rimes owns Thursday night and Beyonce runs the world."

Obama spoke at length at the historically black university about how much race relations have improved since he graduated in 1983, and how far we still have to go.

"[M]ake no mistake, class of 2016. You've got plenty of work to do," Obama said. "But as complicated and intractable as these challenges may seem, the truth is your generation is better position than any before you to meet those challenges."
