New 'Little Obama' ice cream in Russia ruffles feathers
Russians have a new dessert option.
The Moscow Times is reporting that ice cream manufacturer Slavitsa is selling a small-batch of product called Obamka, or "Little Obama."
It is reportedly a frozen chocolate confection packaged in a blue wrapper featuring a smiling dark-skinned boy with a gold earring holding the ice cream bar.
The Times calls it "the latest indication of casual racism in the country."
However, an executive at the ice cream company has said, "There's no political underpinning. We have no intention to offend anyone."
Initial sales have reportedly been strong, resulting in suggestions of similar products like a white chocolate version named "Little Merkel," reports the Observer.
