NJ schools to open, police on high alert as search for escaped prisoner continues

Search Continues For Convicted Child Killer Who Escaped New Jersey Prison

BARNEGAT TOWNSHIP, N.J. (WPIX) — Police say New Jersey schools that were locked down as authorities searched for an inmate who escaped from a minimum security prison will open.

Corrections Department spokesman Matt Schuman said 38-year-old Arthur Buckel was missing when guards at the Ancora unit of Bayside State Prison in Hammonton performed a count Tuesday morning.

Buckel, whose last known address was in Clifton, had been serving a sentence for aggravated assault. He was scheduled to be paroled later this month.

Barnegat Township schools were placed on lockdown Wednesday.

Township police said in a Facebook post Wednesday night that classes will resume Thursday morning.

Officers will be at each school if the search for Buckel isn't over.
