College student beaten on campus says it was a hate crime
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A student from Naperville studying at the University of Iowa was hospitalized after an apparent racially motivated attack last weekend near campus.
Marcus Owen was attacked outside a lounge in Iowa City.
He says he was talking on the phone when he heard someone call him the "N"-word.
He ignored but then heard it again and saw a man coming toward him throwing a punch that Marcus dodged.
He says two more men joined in and beat him until a bystander yelled to stop.
Marcus walked to a local hospital where he learned he was left with a broken eye socket and two chipped teeth and stitches to his lip.
He calls the experience a nightmare but still plans on staying at the University of Iowa.
Today he and his parents met with the university dean as local police investigate this as a hate crime.
