Ed Gernon of Whittier, Calif. probably didn't expect to add a hummingbird to his household pet list, but an unusual event brought him, his dog Rex and a little bird all together.
One afternoon Gernon was out with Rex, a once-feral dog he rescued off the streets, when they came across a scene that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. A tiny hummingbird had fallen from a tree and was laying seemingly lifeless on the ground covered in ants.

"And he suddenly stopped and he would not move," Gernon told CBS. "I mean it's tiny and it's dead as far as I'm concerned. It's covered in ants. It's got no feathers."
Gernon ended up taking the little bird home and nursing her back to health. He even fed her special formula and taught her how to fly using a hair dryer.
That initial moment when Rex refused to move while Hummer, as they now call her, was covered in ants must have really made an impact. Now she refuses to leave Rex's side.
Gernon even posted a video on YouTube showing their interactions.
"...She developed a total crush on Rex. Wherever he was, she wanted to be close by. She even started bathing in his water bowl, killing time while he ate before she'd start playing with him again," he wrote in the video description.
The trio has been together for more than a year, but Gernon says the time may soon come for her to spread her wings.
"It's time for her to start mating and I keep leaving the doors and windows open thinking she'll leave," he said.
But until then, he's enjoying the little phenomenon he's been a part of.
"I rescue this dog. He rescues the bird. The bird rescues all of us in a weird sense and it's just a miracle," Gernon said.
