Caught on camera: Fleeing suspect jumps into Ohio River
PITTSBURGH (WTAE) -- A man is back in custody Wednesday after escaping from a hospital where he was taken following a chase and an attempted getaway in the Ohio River, authorities said.
According to the city's Public Safety Department, a detective in a marked police car was at the intersection of Warrington Avenue and Route 51 at about 6:45 a.m. when a gray sedan pulled up, and the driver, James Edwards Williams, 30, looked at the detective and immediately went through a red light.

The detective ran the license plate and discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen from Bloomfield. He alerted Zone 6 police officers as the car headed toward the West End, and officers were at the West End Circle looking for the vehicle when it approached from behind.
"Upon seeing the marked units, the actor jumped out of the vehicle and ran toward the river. Officers gave chase. The actor led officers to an auto recycling yard where they set up a perimeter," according to a Public Safety statement." As officers checked an abandoned building, they found the actor hiding behind a steel shelving unit in the basement. After giving verbal commands to see the actor's hands, the actor pushed the steel shelving unit on top of a sergeant before fleeing the building. The sergeant was not injured."
Williams ran onto West Carson Street and headed toward the train tracks, then climbed a fence and jumped in the river to swim away but got stuck on a rope along a barge, authorities said.
River Rescue got Williams out of the water. Police said he was arrested and taken to Allegheny General Hospital for injuries suffered during the getaway attempt.
"While at AGH being treated for his injuries, the actor escaped from the hospital. Zone 1 officers chased the actor on foot before he was taken into custody after jumping into a Dumpster," Public Safety said.
The man is being held in the Allegheny County Jail. He faces numerous charges including reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude police, criminal trespass, escape, aggravated assault, open lewdness, receiving stolen property and false identification to law enforcement authorities.
