Shayna Leigh's music is a direct reflection of her personality: charismatic, energetic, and wholly unapologetic. The young pop singer has spent years honing in on her craft by writing, recording, and performing all in search of the sound that best defined her own artistry. Her newest songs from her LP "Drive" are emblematic of her pursuit, showcasing the ups and downs of her life while also showcasing the knowledge she's picked up along the way.
And because of that, her singles, including her latest "Goodbye July," serve as more than just a love or heartbreak songs; they're about learning from the experiences life deals us. The track is a different take on heartbreak, where heartbreak can led to happiness. As she explains, "...it is a love song kind of, but it's really to me about love ending and being okay anyways." Equally interesting is "Goodbye July's" play on traditional pop songs with bluegrass elements -- Leigh's powerful vocals are overlay on top of Mumford Sons-esque instrumentals -- which prove that Leigh's sound can easily transcend genre. Set to a stunning music video that acts as a visual narrative, "Goodbye July" is an honest and genuine portrayal of emotions rarely discussed in traditional pop music.
We recently had the incredible chance to sit down with Shayna Leigh and discuss her song writing process, what life was like on the "Goodbye July" set and more! Below, read her full interview and exclusively watch her newest music video "Goodbye July."

What was the process of creating "Goodbye July" like?
"Goodbye July" was an instrumental piece that Peter had a guitar lick for and that's where it really stemmed from. What I love about it is that it is a love song kind of, but it's really to me about love ending and being okay anyways. Which is really, really important. I think as we put ourselves out there and we fall in love and have these experiences, it's important to understand that most times, they are not meant to be forever. So the idea of rejoicing in the fact that it happened and the person you've become because of that experience, is central. The song really is about growth through connection. For the video, we went through a lot of treatments, but the thing that was the most compelling was that our director focused on that story of a girl in love, and for whatever reason her heart was broken, but she's okay because there's other types of love in life that will ease that pain. I think that's a really good and relevant story.
What was life like on set for the video?
It was the best two days of my life! This video I was in all the shots and in the previous ones that I've done I'm only in a few. So normally they could tell me to bring 50 outfits and I'll only use three of them, but this video I needed a ton of clothes. We did some shopping, styled the scenes, and then we shot it in two days. I'm not sure what it was about making this video, but it was among the most vividly amazing times of my life. I had epiphany moments about my own song while we were making the video. And it was just one of those things where everyone was so happy to be there and play around. We shot it with a small crew and everyone brought their significant others, so it felt like a family.
How has your music evolved over the years?
It's evolved a ton. I think the stories have gotten more personal. I've also added more indie elements than ever before. When I started off, I wanted it to feel like it could be played by five people in a room and I wanted albums to be played exactly live as it was recorded without the help of programming. And as I've made music, I really like the combination of electronic things with organic music. To have the basis be well-written pop songs with solid instrumentation and interesting guitar, keys, and bass alongside beats is interesting to me. I love listening to a Ellie Goulding and hearing how she does that, especially how the quality of her voice is never drowned out. Some of the things that I like in music have become more mainstream too, which is nice. I feel like five years ago it was not so singer/songwriter driven. We have a lot of singer/songwriters now who can tell their stories while also doing cool things with modern technology.

If you know me well or have read interviews I’ve done then you know that @marthastewart has always been my biggest inspiration when it comes to food. One of my goals is to be a combination of my two idols- Martha and Andy Warhol. As a child I would dream about spending the time and care like her to prepare a table, creating something very special for people to join around and share a meal. Watching her cook inspired me to teach myself how to hand weigh ingredients, to always have my mise en place organized, how to pronounce words like vichyssoise, and her wide usage of produce variety is honestly a large part of where my curiosity for our food sparked from. With this said, I’m sure you can imagine my surprise when I was told that I was one of the 25 creatives @marthastewart is inspired by in celebration of their 25th anniversary. Thank you for helping me think and dream so big Martha, I am honored to share this and to make you all of the colors. #25yearsofmartha #foodgradients
I wanted to take a moment to reintroduce myself. I’m Brittany and I recognize that I seem to do a decent job of not sharing much about my actual self here or in interviews. I prefer to keep my art about the food and not myself. This community and my photography have become the biggest part of my life, I love it more than I have words to explain but there's more that makes me who I am. So for a quick moment here’s a bit- I’m 24, a taurus, live in Seattle but grew up in San Diego, my favorite food is a cheeseburger (super thin patty, toasted bun), my favorite bands are @stygoc and @metric, my first tattoo was the one on chest- it’s still my favorite and says ‘love your life’, something many people sadly forget. I was raised by my grandparents, I love to make small collections of items like rocks and stickers, I grew up playing a lot of sports competitively, I love Star Wars and have Boba Fett tattooed on my arm but Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is my favorite movie. Many times I have been told that being an artist “can’t be a real job” and that I was wasting my time trying to do so. I smile everyday not because I proved them wrong but because I achieved a goal. Dream big, everyone.
Thought I might start this week off with a past candy photo. Here's to hoping you all have the best days ahead! #foodgradients
