Pricey Passover: Why Matzah Is So Expensive

Passover is an annual eight-day festival that includes many rituals to help celebrate the end of Jewish slavery in Egypt. The holiday lasts from Friday, April 22 to Saturday, April 30. Enjoying a traditional Passover without breaking your budget is very possible. Miriam Wartell, The Kosher Coupon Lady and author of "I Don't Have Time To Save Money," said that most major supermarket chains offer discounts on items needed for the holiday.

"One trick I like to teach people is to look inside all of their local store ads, regardless of whether they shop there or not," said Wartell. "Often ads will have manufacturer's coupons which, unlike store coupons, can be used at any store. Shoppers should look at local ads to do a brief price comparison and then use their coupons where prices are cheapest."

In addition to searching for Passover discounts, Wartell emphasizes the importance of properly preparing prior to visiting the store. "It's important to always do meal planning before doing Passover shopping," Wartell said. "People tend to overbuy because they don't know what they need. Having a list of what you need based on recipes and eating habits will help people to focus on the items they need to buy."
