Customs agents are no doubt witnesses to countless bizarre smuggling attempts, but one incident in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is likely strange by even their standards. A man was caught at Tan Son Nhat Airport hiding live birds in his pants in an attempt to get them to Taiwan.

The birds were partially enclosed in bags and attached to the man's lower legs.

Officials found additional avian creatures in the individual's luggage, bringing the total count to 18.

Among them, 11 belonged to species classified as protected and thusbanned from being carried over national boundary lines.

The birds found were liberated from their restrictive travel dressings and sent to receive treatment.

Authorities are investigating the thwarted smuggling attempt.
