Sinkholes are bad enough when they open up in yards and in fields, but on Monday afternoon one formed in the middle of a Madera, California street, reports KCRA.

Area police shared video of the void as it grew from a relatively small crack to a gaping chasm.

Pieces of Schnoor Avenue continued to fold into a sewage line until a roughly 12 foot by 15 foot opening had formed.

Authorities estimate the sinkhole is upwards of 20 feet deep and believe recent rains spurred the collapse.

Clearly, the area is now closed to traffic.

It is unknown when the section will reopen, but it is not anticipated that will happen in the near future.
