Barbra Streisand, Barry Levinson to Revive 'Gypsy' for STX Entertainment

Barbara Streisand has found a new home for her long-planned screen version of the musical Gypsy at STX Entertainment as well as a director for the project in Barry Levinson.

Streisand would play the classic stage mother Mama Rose in a new screen adaptation of the classic 1959 musical by Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents that contains such signature anthems as "Some People," "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and the show-stopping "Rose's Turn."

Streisand, who will produce with Joel Silver, had been developing the project at Universal, but that studio put it into turnaround in October.

Negotiations are now underway to set it up at STX, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Richard LaGravanese is writing the screen adaptation on which Streisand is also working.

Based on the 1957 memoir of the famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, the musical follows Mama Rose and her two young daughters, Baby June and Louise, as they pursue stardom on the vaudeville circuit as it morphs into burlesque. Rosalind Russell played Mama Rose in a 1962 film version and Bette Midler took on the part in a 1993 TV adaptation.

Levinson, repped by ICM Partners, most recently directed Rock the Kasbah and won an Oscar as director of 1989's Rain Man. Streisand and LaGravenese are repped by CAA.
