This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Black Girls Rock awards show which honors black women in entertainment. The show hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross honored stars and activists include Rihanna, Amandla Stenberg, Shonda Rhimes, and Black Lives Matter founders Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi.

Before the show was over Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance. The former secretary of state introduced Black Girls Rock founder, Beverly Bond, and shared words on how black women have shaped her life.

"The entire world knows what you know, and that is, black girls rock," Clinton said. "Black women are change makers and path makers and ground shakers. My life has been changed by strong black women leaders, from Marian Wright Edelman to Dorothy Height to Maya Angelou."

"There are still a lot of barriers holding back African Americans and black women in particular, so a gathering like this filled with so many powerful, strong women is a rebuke to every single one of those barriers," Clinton told the crowd. "All of our kids, no matter what zip code they live in, deserve a good teacher and a good school, a safe community and clean water to drink."'

Clinton received a standing novation at the award show but many people on Twitter were confused and uncomfortable by the democratic hopeful's appearance.

Although Clinton is doing significantly better with black voters than her opponent Bernie Sanders, some accused Clinton of pandering and being disingenuous by appearing at the awards show during the election season.

Many noted how important securing votes from black women is -- in 2008 and 2012, black women had a higher voter turn out rate than any other demographic.
