Bananas: they're high in potassium, but could also be the cause of a lot of broken bones in the near future.

Inspired by the iconic video game Mario Kart, the latest viral 'dare' to hit the Internet is called the Banana Peel Challenge -- and it's exactly as ridiculous as it sounds.

Teens from all walks of life are taking to social media to find out if stepping on a banana skin produces the same effect "as seen in the cartoons," taping the entire spectacle for their followers to see and share.

The trend originated with Twitter user @JaasonOakes, who uploaded a video testing out the Mario Kart feature, which lead to the demise of characters in the game. The viral clip has since been retweeted of 100,000 times and favorited over 105,000 times.

The resulting hashtag #BananaPeelChallenge has gained steam, with hundreds of teens uploading their experience, which generally ends up with them moaning in pain, laying on the floor.
