CBS renews 11 series, no word on freshman class
Jumping on the renewal bandwagon, CBS' 2016-17 schedule is starting to take shape. The network announced 11 series renewals on Friday morning, though none of them are among the freshman class.
Those making the cut for the first round of renewals, and joining the previous orders for respective comedy and drama flagships The Big Bang Theory and NCIS, are Blue Bloods, Elementary, Hawaii Five-0, Madam Secretary, Mom, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Scorpion and 2 Broke Girls. On the reality front, both Survivor and The Amazing Race will also make expected returns.
The network appears to be holding off on renewing any first year shows for the time being, though not all of them have aired yet (see: Rush Hour) -; and CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves recently commented that he anticipated most of the class would make it to next season. "We have five new shows on this year," Moonves said, referring to Life In Pieces, Code Black, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Supergirl and Limitless. "Of those five, I believe all five of them will be renewed, and we own four of them."
Still missing on the returning series front are Criminal Minds and CSI: Cyber. The Good Wife, Mike & Molly and Person of Interest were all previously announced as ending with this current season. The only other returning series, comedy The Odd Couple, has yet to even make its midseason return.

It's worth noting that CSI: Cyber is the last standing series in a decades-old franchise that saw the parent series finally wrap in 2015. Criminal Minds, which just hit a season high among adults 18-49, is also an established exclusion from these renewals. Now in its 11th season, Criminal Minds is also seeing solid initial returns for spinoff Beyond Borders.
On the drama front, this batch of orders makes for some very long tenures for some. Friday staples Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five-0, both from CBS Television Studios, will now go into their seventh seasons. And NCIS: Los Angeles will be entering its eighth season on the network, while fellow spinoff NCIS: New Orleans is now heading into its third season -; as are Madam Secretary and Scorpion. Elementary hits its fifth season.
In terms of studios, nearly all of these scripted series come from CBS. Only comedies Mom and 2 Broke Girls, entering their respective fourth and sixth seasons, are outside productions -; each from Warner Bros. The reality renewals bring The Amazing Race to the 29 season mark, while Survivor will enter its 33rd cycle on the network.
With CBS ordering so much of its returning slate, it joins ABC, NBC and the CW in solidifying the bulk of the 2016-17 roster. Only its new and bubble series, as well as several Fox shows, really remain up in the air for renewals as pilot season continues and the networks ready for the May upfront presentations.
CBS has canceled just one freshman series thus far this season, comedy Angel From Hell.
