Justin Bieber Scores first adult pop songs No. 1 with 'Love Yourself'

Justin Bieber's run of reaching new chart heights, thanks to his album Purpose, continues, as "Love Yourself" becomes his first No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Pop Songs radio airplay chart (dated March 26, 2016).

The song previously became his third No. 1, all from Purpose, on the Pop Songs airplay tally, following "What Do You Mean?" and "Sorry." Those smashes became his first top 10s on Adult Pop Songs, reaching Nos. 8 and 3, respectively.

All three tracks from Purpose likewise became Bieber's first three leaders on the all-format airplay/sales/streaming-based Billboard Hot 100. "Mean" reigned upon its Sept. 19 debut at No. 1; "Sorry" led the list for three weeks; and "Love Yourself" ruled for two frames. Purpose has sold 1.6 million copies in the U.S. to date, according to Nielsen Music.

Bieber's new breakthrough on Adult Pop Songs could spur further long-term benefits, says Rob Lucas, music director of chart reporter WTSS Buffalo, N.Y. The format (aka, adult top 40, or hot AC) is the "true test of how timeless a song may be." Hits exclusive to the more of-the-moment, youth-focused Pop Songs chart "may not be heard anywhere in five years," he says. With adult pop's greater emphasis on time-tested titles, "the biggest Adult Pop Songs hits will likely be played by numerous formats five years down the road."

Meanwhile, "Love Yourself" co-writer Ed Sheeran makes another trip to the top of Adult Pop Songs. He's earned two No. 1s on the chart as an artist (with songs that he also wrote): "Thinking Out Loud" and "Photograph," each of which ruled for six weeks last year.
