Astronomers Discover The Biggest Structure In Universe

Space is so massive that scientists have discovered an enormous grouping of galaxy superclusters that is believed to measure about 1 billion light years across, reports New Scientist.

As such, it has become the biggest entity identified in the cosmos thus far.

The system is called the BOSS Great Wall; BOSS is an acronym for Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey which is a broad mapping project.

According to a new study about the find, the structure is believed to contain more than 830 galaxies which have formed into four superclusters.

Flows of hot gas called galaxy filaments connect these larger groupings together.

However, some scientists are questioning if the wall is, in fact, one structure.

The test, according to one expert, is to see if it moves together as a unit, but because they are roughly five billion light years away, that task is considered unrealistic.

Previously established systems include the Sloan Great Wall, CfA2 Wall, and the Laniakea supercluster.
