5 Tips for Maternity Style

When real, non-famous people get pregnant, it's not uncommon for nine months of sweatpants and oversized T-shirt-wearing to ensue. Comfort, most of us would agree, is key, when carrying a child, and for some reason, a comfortable outfit often equates to something less than chic. Celebrities, however, almost seem to get more stylish when with child. Kate Middleton sported tailored, fitted dresses through both of her pregnancies and Kim Kardashian seemed to actually show more skin than she does when she isn't pregnant. And don't even get us started on the heels, which, of course, every expectant A-list mama rocks effortlessly.

So what's the deal with celebrity maternity style, and why is it so hard for us to emanate? We chatted with Robin Otto, a maternity fashion expert from zulily.com to find out.

Why is it that celebrities seem to be able to have such chic pregnancies? What are they doing differently when they get dressed in the morning?

I think celebrities are good at taking risks. I think as women, we often talk ourselves out of trying something new in fear of our own securities. We are sometimes our own worst critic. Try stepping outside of your comfort zone -- you would be surprised by some of the compliments you get!

What are the top trends for maternity looks these days?

Maxi dresses are back again this year and have never been prettier! Another big trend we're seeing are florals -- our moms cannot get enough of them.

What is the most flattering way to dress when pregnant?

Anything that is either rouched down the sides or has an empire waist. This allows you to show off the belly while still giving yourself some shape with the dress pulling in at the smallest part of your torso.

Who are some stars with standout maternity looks, other than Kim Kardashian?

I think Chrissy Teigen has done a great job of dressing her baby bump! She is trendy, while still being classy. I would say another great standout star while pregnant has been Rose Byrne. She has such a a sweet and classic style, and did a great job of finding silhouettes that worked well with her petite frame.

Are there any rules for dressing when pregnant?

Avoid wearing any tops that are too short. There is nothing worse than seeing a pregnant woman in a top that is too short. It looks like you are trying to squeeze into something that is too small and that is never a good look on anyone.

What are your thoughts on high heels during pregnancy?

If you want to rock them, I say go for it! Do whatever makes you comfortable. I know many women who could walk 10 miles in heels, while others can barely walks 10 steps (pregnant or not).

What are some of the best brands for maternity (or on-maternity) clothes to shop when pregnant?

Some of my favorite brands are Pinkblush Maternity, Lilac Maternity, Maternal America and a new brand called Hello Miz. They are all trendy, while also affordable A few other brands that I think are great for basics are Mom & Co. and Oh! Mamma, both of which can be found on zulily.

So there you have it, ladies! Your complete guide to a fashionable pregnancy. Now you have no excuses for breaking out those sweatpants!
