Marco Rubio won the Republican presidential primary in Puerto Rico, the Associated Press reported on Sunday, securing more than 50 percent of the vote.

Donald Trump came in a distant second, while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz followed in third place.

Rubio's win comes just one day after his opponents called on him to drop out of the race.

Trump called on the Florida senator to bow out on Saturday during a speech in West Palm Beach after Rubio's poor showing on Super Saturday.

Rubio is the only presidential candidate to visit Puerto Rico. He held a rally in a San Juan suburb on Saturday and is projected to win a majority of the island's 23 delegates.

Even though Puerto Rico is not eligible to vote in the general election, both parties allow the island's residents to vote in the primaries.

The next Republican primary event will be on Tuesday in Michigan and Mississippi. In addition to those states, the Democrats will hold a caucus in Hawaii and a primary in Idaho.
