The health benefits to drinking one extra glass of water a day are insane
Who needs the Holy Grail, when it turns out the key to looking fresh and maintaining a healthy weight is just drinking a little more water?
And not even the fancy sparkling kind! New research out of the University of Illinois shows just one more glass per day can help you better control your weight.
Researchers found that upping the consumption of plain water by one percentage point was associated with dietary benefits like reducing the amount of calories, sugar, sodium and cholesterol ingested.
That makes sense, since participants in the seven-year study ate less because the extra water made them feel full.
The lead researcher discovered that out of 18,000 participants, the average adult consumed 4.2 cups of plain water daily, well below the eight glasses recommended by most health authorities.
The small but statistically significant one-percent increase of plain water helped curb cravings.
For example, people who drank two or three more cups daily saved themselves from consuming more than 200 extra calories daily.
Hear that? That's the sound of hundreds of people sighing in relief, at the idea of skipping the gym tonight and embracing the "tap water diet" instead.
