A sheriff's deputy was killed and two other officers wounded on Wednesday in central Colorado during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect who died as a result of the confrontation, a county spokeswoman said.

Two area schools were placed on lockdown during the incident.

The shooting happened following a "police action" at an unspecified location before 10 a.m. (1200 ET) near the community of Bailey, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, said Park County spokeswoman Linda Balough.

One Park County Sheriff's Office deputy was shot and died from his injuries, Balough said. Two others received non-life-threatening injuries. One deputy was treated at an area hospital.

The male suspect of unknown age died after opening fire on the deputies, Balough said.

There was no further information on the exact nature of the incident, though Balough said the deputies "had a reason to be where they were."

The exact location of the confrontation was not immediately available, nor was the nature of the injuries suffered by those involved, Balough said.
