Spike Lee endorses Bernie Sanders for president

Spike Lee has endorsed Bernie Sanders for president.

The veteran director, whose latest film is Chi-Raq, made his announcement on a radio spot that will air in South Carolina ahead of the Democratic primary Saturday.

"Wake up, South Carolina," Lee says to open the spot. "This is your dude, Spike Lee. And I know that you know the system is rigged. For too long we've given our votes to corporate puppets. Sold the okie-doke. Ninety-nine percent of Americans were hurt by the Great Recession of 2008, and many are still recovering."

The endorsement is a minute long and has music playing over it the entire time.

"When Bernie gets in the White House, he will do the right thing," Lee said in a likely nod to his 1989 film of the same name. "How can we be sure? Bernie was at the March on Washington with Dr. King. He was arrested in Chicago for protesting segregation in public schools."

Lee endorsed President Obama in 2008 and again in 2012.

Sanders had a decisive victory in New Hampshire but has been beaten twice by Hillary Clinton, in the Iowa and Nevada caucuses.
