Taiwan's unusual New Year ceremony

On the day of the first full moon in the lunar calendar, local Taiwanese residents conduct an unusual harbor cleansing ritual.

God icons are carried by boat and then taken into the water before finally being carried through hot coals.

The purpose of the ritual is to bring good luck for the year ahead.
