'Hamilton' cast to perform the Grammys opening number
LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - The cast of "Hamilton" will be performing at the Grammys this year.
The members of the hit Broadway show will perform the opening number of the show, though not on-stage, Lin-Manual Miranda, the musical's creator and star, told USA Today. Their performance will be broadcast live from the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City while the rest of the show will be at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Although most Broadway productions -- including "Hamilton" -- are dark Monday nights, there will be a live audience in the Richard Rodgers for the event.
"We're going to do the opening number, scream with joy, and then celebrate the fact that we were just on the Grammys," Miranda said. "Best night ever."
The show, about the life of Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers, has been a runaway hit since it opened in August. In fact, most tickets are already sold out through 2016. The performances incorporate hip-hop, musical theater and other American influences in its accounting.
"We've never done any live performances in front of a televised audience," said "Hamilton" producer Jeffrey Seller. "It's always been important for us to perform in context. Once (Grammy executives) said, 'We'll come to you,' we knew it would work."
