Librarians are no doubt used to handling the late returns of books, but one in particular came as quite a surprise to staff at Holland, Michigan's Herrick District Library.

The publication was 49 years overdue.
A note of explanation and apology was sent in along with the book.
It read, "I was a student at Hope College in 1967. I must have been doing a paper or some research on World War II as I checked out the enclosed book. Somewhere along the way it got mixed up with my personal things and put into a trunk...I have moved the trunk many times but until recently never opened it. Upon doing so, I found your book."
The patron also included a donation to cover the likely 'tremendous fine.'
