13 people rescued moments before yacht sinks off Florida coast
A luxurious boat ride turned into a rescue situation on Monday night in Florida.
Thirteen people had to be taken off a 106-foot yacht after it began taking on water in the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea area.
A distress call was reportedly made around 6pm.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded by deploying a helicopter and a pair of boats for the operation, and all the passengers were found uninjured and eventually transported safely to an onshore location.
However, the yacht, named Serena III, did not survive the incident. According to a Coast Guard Officer, it sank completely into the water about 25 minutes after the last person was removed.
While the cause of the malfunction still seems to be unknown, one person involved in the operation suspects a possible mechanical failure.
