We've all been there. From awkward first dates to uncomfortable family dinners and boring meetings that just won't end, we've all been in a situation where we were silently willing our phones to ring just so we could invent an excuse to leave.
Now, finally, there is an app that can help with these situations and we have Chelsea Handler to thank. Chelsea Handler: Gotta Go, an app for making well-timed excuses to leave, launched Saturday alongside the first installment of Handler's new Netflix documentary.
Despite its tie-in with the show, which could make it seem gimmicky, the iPhone app lives up to its claims. It allows you to create and save custom recipes for excuses that you can trigger any time you open the app. For each excuse, you fill a reason (my car is getting towed, for instance), the name of the contact who will call or text you and at what time you want to receive the message. When you save each excuse you add an emoji to help you remember which one is which.
Once the designated time rolls around, your phone will light up with an actual call or text. If it's a text, the message will say exactly what you specified when you created the excuse. If it's a phone call, however, you'll hear a pre-recorded message from Handler instructing you how to act in order to make your exit convincing.
The ideas for the excuses and the call recordings came from Handler herself, says Tony Scherba, president of Yeti, the company that developed the app.
The app is iPhone only for now but Scherba didn't rule out the possibility of an Android app at some point, depending on the response to the current version. The response will also determine how long the company will continue to support the app, he said.
"It's an experiment, we're going to release it and see what happens," Scherba told Mashable. "If people like it, we'll figure out how to keep it going."
