Toddler dies after grandmother's gun goes off in bed: Police
NEW ORLEANS (WPIX) -- A 42-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly sleeping with a gun under her pillow that went off, striking and killing a toddler early Wednesday morning.
New Orleans Police Department received a call around 2:12 a.m. about a shooting at a home on Red Maple Drive in New Orleans. When they arrived, a 3-year-old toddler was suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
He was taken to the hospital where he died.
The child's grandmother, Deonca Kennedy, was the only person in the house at the time, according to New orleans Police Department press release.
Police believe Kennedy was sleeping with a gun under her pillow when it went off. The toddler, sleeping next to her, was struck in the chest.
Kennedy refused to answer any questions when asked her about the incident, police said.
The grandmother was booked on three counts of negligent homicide, second degree cruelty to a juvenile and child desertion Wednesday.
There is an ongoing investigation.
