3 ways to wear a classic white shirt
I bet you either own a classic white shirt already, or have had one on your shopping list for a while. A classic white shirt is just that – a classic. It is a great staple, which lends itself to being dressed up or down, for the weekend or work, and it comes in so many different cuts and styles, you can have a few to hand for different climates and occasions.
The white shirt featured in this post is from Boden; it is a slim fit, it is structured and comes in a true white. I have a handful of other white shirts in my wardrobe including a lightweight linen version for summer, a slouchier boyfriend fit and a white shirt dress. Choose a white shirt which fits your lifestyle. Or, like me, choose a few . . . !
When people think of a classic white shirt, I feel that a 'work shirt' probably comes to mind first. A wellfitted, crisp white shirt, looks so smart and immediately sets the tone for a professional look.
I like to use a classic white shirt, paired with well-fitting black trousers as the basis for so many of my smarter looks.
You can then add a slightly more fun jacket, like this one from Karen Millen (now in the sale!), in to the mix. Just because you're a t work, doesn't mean you have to dress in a way which doesn't feel like you. I love print and colour, so a tailored jacket with fun details is my way of adding personality to a more conservative look.
A classic white shirt, worn with true blue denim jeans, is a fashion formula which never fails. There's something so fresh about a crisp white shirt worn with denim – I love it! I like to roll my sleeve cuffs up, half tuck my shirt in and go with the creases – the more relaxed the better!
You'll notice that in every one of these looks that I have kept the hair and makeup the same, but changed up my accessories. The subtle difference between a hoop earring (weekend), stud earring (work) and chandelier earring (cocktail) really makes all the difference to the overall feel of each look.
If you are going from work to drinks, consider having a few accessories to hand, to easily dress up your white shirt for after hours – new earrings, or a sparkly clutch are the quickest updates ever! Speaking of which . . .
YES to a white shirt worn for cocktails! For some reason, this just makes me so happy . I love the contrast of the elegant prim top half, worn with a fun pleated midi skirt.
Both of these items separately could be styled to evoke a completely different vibe, but worn together, with the addition of some glittery accessories – it's suddenly cocktail hour appropriate.
