Prosecutors: NJ dad killed son because 17-year-old girlfriend didn't like the child
CAMDEN, N.J. (WPIX) -- A New Jersey father is accused of killing his 3-year-old son and dumping his body in a park near his home, all because the suspect's teenage girlfriend did not like having the toddler around, according to prosecutors.
David Creato Jr., 22, was arraigned Tuesday on murder and child endangerment charges. His bail was set at $750,000.
The young father was arrested Monday in connection with 3-year-old Brendan Creato's death last fall, according to Camden County prosecutors.
The toddler's body was found Oct. 13, 2015, partially submerged in the water at a park in New Jersey, KYW reports.
Investigators did not reveal the child's cause of death, saying he suffered "homicidal violence," which could mean smothering or strangulation, according to the station.
Prosecutors argue that Creato began dating a 17-year-old girl last summer who didn't like the child and resented her boyfriend's dealings with the boy's mother, KYW reports. The pair shared custody of the toddler.
The girl went away to college and, according to prosecutors, became upset that Creato had custody of his son every other weekend, limiting their time together.
It was also reported that Creato was alleged to have been jealous of a boy that his girlfriend was talking to at college, and is accused of logging in to her social media accounts.
The girl repeatedly threatened to break up with Creato, prosecutors said.
Creato's attorney, Richard Fuschino Jr., called the prosecution's case "weak" and "circumstantial."
