CARMEL, Ind. (January 11, 2016) -- First responders have been busy helping drivers across central Indiana battling the first snowstorm of the year.
More snow is on the way and the roads are going to be even slicker. It only take one turn for a clear road to turn into a skating rink. Driving instructors at AA Indiana Driving School gave FOX59 a lesson on how to maneuver the slippery roads safely.
"If you're going too slow you can always speed up, if you're going too fast bad things happen," said driving instructor Mike Ward.
If you find yourself sliding on an icy patch there are three important words to remember: stomp, stay and steer.
"You stomp on the brakes, stay on the brakes and steer normally."
If you try to jerk your steering wheel or turn it sharply, it could create more of a problem.
"If you make a drastic turn then lots of times what will happen is your back wheels might get on the ice and get loose and come around on you," Ward said.

In clear conditions you want to have at least two seconds between you and the car in front of you. In snowy or icy conditions, driving instructors encourage you to increase that distance to at least five or six seconds.
"That's what causes problems when you get in a hurry, just slow down and get there. You might be a little late, but at least you'll get there without having a collision," said Ward.
DPW has at least 65 trucks working the roadways throughout the night. Crews will put down salt as the snow falls.
