Chloe Grace Moretz is ready to take on an iconic role in the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, but she wasn't ready for the controversy she ignited when she mentioned that her version of the character might be blonde!
"It is a big controversy," the actress said, referencing comments she made to ET at the KIIS-FM iHeartRadio Jingle Ball on Dec. 4, when she said that the character would be based more on the Hans Christian Andersen novel than the 1989 animated Disney film. "I'll actually have blonde hair," she said at the time.
"I literally just said it in passing," Moretz clarified to ET on Thursday at a junket for her new sci-fi film The 5th Wave. "I wasn't even being super meaningful about it. I was like, 'I don't even know what it's going to be!' It could be blue for all I know."

For Moretz, the controversy was an eye-opening moment about taking on such a beloved character.
"It shows I may need to think about what I'm saying because a lot of people care," she added. "I spoke out of turn, and I don't even know. We're hiring our director pretty soon and once we're able to release that, we're gonna pow wow and figure out exactly what we want our Little Mermaid to look like and be like."
Sofia Coppola left the project in June, and as Disney searches for new talent to direct the film as it moves forward in pre-production, Moretz is certain they will gain more clarity about the film's tone, including whether or not the story will take on a darker tone, based on Andersen's original story.
"Again, I don't want to say things out of turn but we're definitely going to take a more naturalistic view on it, like the book," she said. "Keep it a bit more grounded and keep it a bit more realistic but also make it a real heroine story, make it a true story for young women to look at now and be proud of, because that's my main goal."
As for the hair, the actress says nothing's off the table.
"Who knows! We don't know. I could have no hair, I could have so much hair," she said with a laugh. "I could have a pixie cut. The Bald Mermaid? Because that's realistic."
The 5th Wave is in theaters Jan. 22.
